- The process variable server cannot be started. The cause here might be that a non-compatible version of WinCC is installed on your computer.
Remedy:
Check the version of the software package installed with the compatibility list. This is available in your STEP 7 directory as file S7KOMP_x.PDF (x stands for the language: a = German, b = English, c = French, d = Spanish, e = Italian).
- The cause might also be that you have a mixed installation of STEP 7. Before installing STEP 7 V5.x you probably had STEP 7 version V4.0 or V4.01 installed on your PC.
Remedy:
We recommend that you deinstall STEP 7 completely. For this please proceed as described in Entry ID: 189025 - "Complete deinstallation of STEP 7 including all software packages".
- The paths in the AUTOEXEC.bat are not set. In this respect please also refer to Entry ID 51307 - "Messages at system boot, incomplete PATH variable in autoexec.bat".
- STEP 7 is installed on a computer that is connected to an office network via the Novell network software.
Remedy:
Check the system attributes of the Novell network connection and follow the notes given in the readme of STEP 7 (section 2.3 Using network drives). |

- A file required by STEP 7 could not be found. Probably the project contains objects for which an options package that is not installed is required to process them.

- An authorization permitting SIMATIC PDM to be integrated in STEP 7 is missing. This authorization is an optional authorization that has to be installed in addition to the basic authorization of SIMATIC PDM.
Remedy:
The additional authorization for integrating SIMATIC PDM in STEP 7 must be installed. |

- The STEP 7 project to be opened contains files from the technological hierarchy options package. Either this options package is not installed or is not correctly recognized after STEP 7 has been overinstalled again.
Remedy:
Reinstall the "Technological hierarchy" options package. |

Remedy:
Install the SINUMERIK options package with a version >= V5. |

- Multiple HMI projects are contained in a STEP 7 project and
- Two or more HMI projects are to be processed at the same time.

We recommend the following remedies for this message:
- Check the virtual main memory. Increase the virtual main memory to at least 700 to 800 MB. More information on setting the virtual main memory in the various operating systems is also available in Entry ID: 20440472 (Notes on optimizing performance).
- Switch off the virus scanner and check whether the behavior described still occurs without the virus scanner.
- Please also refer to the notes in the readme file of STEP 7 concerning access authorization. You must be logged in at least as user or standard user (not as guest) in order to be able to work with STEP 7 in MS Windows 2000/2003/XP. You need administrator rights to install the STEP 7 software and install modules via the application "Set PG/PC Interface".
- Make a copy of the STEP 7 project in which the behavior described above occurs, using "Save as" together with the option "With reorganization (slow)".
- Furthermore, it is possible that entries in the Register have been changed through the installation of a security update in Microsoft Windows, which causes the behavior described above. For this we recommend reinstalling STEP 7 and then installing a Service Pack (e.g. SP3 for STEP 7 V5.3).
